Saw this little sign on a nice big table at a public library, indicating permission to eat at it:

You may eat in this area.

Eating is allowed on this table at the Northgate public library in Seattle.

Do you think people should be allowed to eat at the library?

I love the idea of eating being welcomed in designated areas at the library.

While some problems may arise (distracting unpleasant odors, crunchy noises, ambiguity over where it’s okay leading to spillover, etc.) I think it solves more problems (you can eat HERE, but not THERE is easier and kinder to enforce than NO EATING) it causes, and is a necessity, more than a privilege, for a lot of people (kids, people with limited time or space waiting for a bus, people who can’t afford the money or time or physical demands to go eat out or travel back home, etc.), especially in inclement weather.

Sure people may make a mess and fail to clean it up. But they do that anyway: with or without food.
